Objectives
Most people say they feel uncomfortable in a large group of people they don’t know. This icebreaker is especially great to for a large group. Wallflowers and social butterflies alike will enjoy meeting new people and finding common ground. The aim is to help people find others who share common interests or preferences.
Instructions
Begin by asking everyone to stand, and let them know they will be moving around. Ask the questions below, one at a time, and have the group divide into smaller groups based on their answer. Once divided into groups, allow a little time for interaction, and then move on to the next question. Encourage everyone to look for people who keep showing up in their group.
Use as many of the questions below as needed. There are plenty!
- Roll toothpaste up from the bottom? Or not?
- Clasp your hands together. Which thumb is on top? Left? Or right?
- Toilet paper rolling over or under?
- Still have your tonsils? Yes? No?
- Milk chocolate or dark?
- Pool or river?
- High heels or flip flops?
- Phone call or text message?
- Morning or evening?
- Board game or video game?
- Fall or spring?
- Coffee or juice?
- Sun or rain?
- Dog or cat?
- Country or rock and roll?
- Big purse or little purse?
- Cash or card?
- City or country?
- Print or cursive?
- Steak or salad?
- Red or pink?
- Computer or television?
- Handshake or hug?
Variations
- Which region of the country are you from? (Post signs in advance for each region and have the women separate into groups based on where they were born, where they have lived for the past five years, where they have lived most of their lives, etc.).
- What color shoes are you wearing? (Place colored paper in various places and have the women gather near the color that best matches the shoes they are wearing).
- Did you eat breakfast this morning? (A sure room divider!)
- One story home, Two story home, Apartment/Condo?
We love this icebreaker because it moves people around the room and helps them interact in a non-threatening way. It’s lots of fun, and we hope you will give it a try.
